The Carnegie Building Is Home
to
Terrell Heritage Society Museum

A State of Texas Historical
Landmark
In 1903 a resolution favoring the
erection of a building to contain a free public library was
passed by the City of Terrell. Three local women’s clubs were
responsible and they asked Mr. Andrew Carnegie to finance this
building. He agreed to do so if the City would furnish the ground
and agreed on a fixed amount to support the library yearly.

The Carnegie building was completed by
Goodman & Anderson Company in March of 1904.

The building was used as a public library
until 1985 at which tine the Terrell Heritage Society, Inc. was
given permission by the City of Terrell to use it a their
organization headquarters and their museum which had been located
on the second floor since 1973.

The primary role of the museum is to
collect and exhibit historic objects pertaining to Terrell and the
surrounding area, and to interpret the signification of the
heritage of these exhibits.
